Siamese Fighting Fish - Betta

Scientific name: Betta splendens

Origin: The Mekong basin in Asia

Size: The Siamese fighting fish can reach a size of 6.5 cm / 2.5 inches

Colour: Can be obtained in several colour variants, including red, purple and blue.

Shape: The males in the aquarium trade have a delicate and flowing finnage.

Temperament: Never house to male Siamese fighting fish together since they can fight each other until one fish is dead and the other one severely injured. If you want to keep males and females together, you should keep several females with one male to reduce the stress experienced by each female.

Care: Siamese fighting fish is sometimes sold in tiny vases, but this is not a suitable home for it. A Siamese fighting fish need a proper aquarium just like any other fish. There is a difference between doing well and merely surviving.

Feeding: Will accept flake food. You can vary the diet by feeding the fish live foods such as mosquito larvae.

Water conditions: The pH should be from 6.0 to 8.0 and the water temperature within the 24- 30° C / 75 - 86° F range.

Breeding: Siamese fighting fish is easy to breed, but the male can injure the female during the courting period. Keep one male with several females and provide the females with plenty of hiding spots. The male will create a nest from bubbles to protect the eggs. He will watch over the nest until the fry is free swimming.
