Livebearers
A majority of the world's fish species are egg layers, but some species use another reproductive method – they give birth to free swimming fry. This type of fish is known as livebearers and the eggs will develop inside the female fish until the fry is large enough to survive in the outside world. Some of the most popular fish species among beginner aquarists are livebearers, e.g. Guppy, Platy and Swordtail. In the livebearing group you will find a lot of sturdy fish species that are easy to keep and breed in aquariums. Livebearers are also kept by advanced aquarists, and some people breed livebearers to use as feeding fish for other species.
