Swordtails

Scientific name: Xiphophorus helleri
Origin: Central America
Temperament: The Swordtail is a docile fish and it is therefore common in community tanks. It is sturdy and adaptable, and thereby a good choice for your first aquarium.
Food: The Swordtail will accept flakes, but supplementing this diet with some live foods is appreciated. Choose a high quality flake to make sure the fish receives all necessary nutrients.
Care: Caring for a Swordtail is not complicated. You can prevent fish diseases by adding some salt to the aquarium.
Water conditions: The Swordtail originates from warm waters in Central America and the temperature in the aquarium should therefore be between 25 and 28 degrees C (77 and 82 degrees F). Keep the pH in the 7.0-7.5 range.
Gender: The male Swordtail can be distinguished on his gonopodium (an anal fin that has developed into a reproductive organ). The male can also be recognized on the long extension fin located on the bottom half of his tailfin. A female Swordtail grows larger than a male Swordtail, and her body is plumper.
Breeding: Swordtails are livebearers and they are not difficult to breed in aquariums. If you want the fry to survive, you should either keep them in a well planted aquarium or move them to their own tank where they will not be eaten by the adult fish.
Additional comments: The Swordtail is an energetic and active fish that is fun to watch. It will add some action to your aquarium, without being a violent species.
