White Cloud
Scientific name: Tanichthys albonubes
Origin: This fish is native to the White Cloud mountains in China.
Size: The max size is 4.0 cm / 1.5 inches.
Color: Chiefly red and grey. The colors can be enhanced by proper feeding. Specimens kept outdoors in ponds are usually more colorful since they get a more varied diet that includes insect larvae and algae.
Temperament: This is a peaceful species that will work well in a community tank with other fish that prefer cooler temperatures.
Care: Keep at least one pair, preferably even more specimens. Will appreciate a planted aquarium or an aquarium where plenty of hiding spots have been created.
Feeding: Live foods and frozen foods are best, but the White Clouds will usually accept commercially prepared foods too.
Water conditions: A pH of 6.0 – 8.0 and water temperature around 16°C / 60°F is ideal.
Breeding: The White Cloud is comparatively easy to breed in aquariums. If you keep the fish in a well planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spaces you do not need a separate fry tank. White Clouds show no brood care.
Additional comments: The White Cloud hails from Chinese mountains where the climate is colder than in the tropics. They are therefore used to a lower water temperature.
