Zebra Danio

Scientific name: Danio rerio
Origin: The Zebra Danio is native to freshwaters in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Pakistan.
Size: The Zebra Danio grows up to 6.0 cm / 2 inches.
Colour: The body is grey with green-blue stripes across, hence the name Zebra Danio.
Temperament: This is a peaceful fish suitable for community aquariums with other peaceful species.
Care: The Zebra Danio prefers a decorated aquarium with plants and hiding spaces. Keep at least 6 specimens together.
Feeding: Accepts flake floods and appreciates occasional treats in the form of brine shrimp, bloodworms and similar.
Water conditions: The pH should be kept between 6.0 and 8.0. The ideal water temperature is 18-24° C / 65-75° F.
Breeding: These fishes are easy to breed. They are egg-layers and the fry will typically hatch within 36 hours. Provide the fry with hiding spots, e.g. by covering the bottom with large marbles, or raise the fry in a separate tank without any adults.
Additional comments: The Zebra Danio is a very sturdy species and therefore commonly used as cycling fish in new aquariums. It can also be used as dither fish to make shy fish species feel more secure in the aquarium.
